On the Road to Success – receives very positive feedback.

On the 14th of April the Career Development Group of the Library Association of Ireland  (LAI CDG) hosted their annual CV and Interview workshop “On the Road to Success” in the Berkeley Library in Trinity College Dublin.  The workshop provided a framework for delegates applying for library positions.

Delegates at the workshop were a mixture of experienced Librarians interesting in applying for more senior posts, recent graduates wishing to make the transition from library assistant positions to professional positions and soon to be newly graduated librarians.  Attendees networked and had many interesting conversations with the LAI CDG committee and the speakers.  While there was some commonality in presentations, each speaker brought their unique perspective and provided invaluable information to attendees.

The Chair of the LAI CDG Emma Dolan from Manynooth University introduced the speakers. The workshop began with a presentation by Marie O’ Neill whose career spans over 25 years and she worked in the libraries of King’s Inns, South Eastern Health Board, DIT, UCD, the Wales Office (formerly Welsh Office) and the Oireachtas. She is currently employed as Head of Library Services at Dublin Business School where she has worked for eleven years.  The title of Marie’s presentation was “Tips for Getting Ahead in Interviews in the Library and Information sector”.  She provided numerous useful tips including strategies for quickly identifying key reports, researching the interests of panel members and a wonderful “keep calm” strategy prior to interview.  You may view her slide presentation here.

The next speaker was Niamh Hanratty the Knowledge Center Manager in Arthur Cox.    She outlined how to prepare for an interview in a corporate/legal library.  Niamh’s presentation was relevant for both those working in the private sector and public sector.  Her slide presentation may be viewed here.  Before lunch Maeve Mc Cauley the Deputy Librarian in Letterkenny Institute of Technology spoke.  She provided practical steps for candidates when interviewing for a promotion.  Maeve highlighted different strategies to employ when interviewing for a promotion.  Her presentation can be accessed here.

After lunch Deirdre Judge the Institute librarian from IADT made an engaging presentation.  She is passionate about all things digital and enjoys working in IADT which is a super creative environment with a great bunch of diverse learners.  Deirdre’s presentation was entitled “So you want that job? Some thoughts from the other side”.  Deirdre provided an interviewers perspective of the process and what changes applicants can expect from the interview process in the future.  Deirdre’s presentation is available here.  The final speaker was Shirley Moloney and she is the Library staffing and finance manager in UCD with 25 years experience.  She has conducted an impressive 145 interviews and viewed 732 applications.  Shirley’s presentation was on “CV and Interview Advice for Academic Libraries”.  Shirley provided useful tips on how to get shortlisted, when to apply for a position and how to prepare for an interview.  Here slide presentation may be accessed here.

For the final 30 minutes of the workshop Deirdre Judge, Shirley Moloney and Maeve Mc Cauley answered questions from the attendees.  There was ample time provided for delegates to mingle and network.  The speakers were available at these times to discuss any issues delegates wished to raise or to provide their contact details.

Feedback of the event was very positive and included the following comments –

“There was so much relevant and useful advice”.

“Super hearing from the pros!”

“Saturdays are brilliant to organize for events because of work commitments!”

“Practical, accessible and informative”.

“Knowledgeable speakers”.

At the conclusion Emma Dolan spoke about LibCamp the next LAI CDG event on Saturday May the 26th where the participants set the agenda for the day.  To keep abreast of all LAI CDG events follow us on Facebook.
